They are best for answering the Big Questions and provide the starting point on the road to discovery. Like many oracles, runes will not provide a yes or no answer but places the onus on the seeker to take responsibility for the message. Some symbols will feel familiar to tarot readers, like sowilo, the sun, but they also bite like an arctic winter with titles such as ice, hail and need. Unlike tarot, the runes aren’t exactly archetypes but are informed by the flora, fauna and weather of their birthplace. Runes use letters and language to paint a picture for contemplation. That’s a lot to think about in only a handful of words! Tarot starts with an image that prompts the words that make a reading. These poems provide us with the basis for interpreting the meaning of each rune. Over many centuries different peoples wrote poems as a memory aid for each of the letters. The first letter, Fehu, makes the sound "f", but it also represented cattle, and more relevant to most of us today, cash money. Hebrew and the ancient Celtic alphabets are other examples. Runes are unique in that they are one of the few alphabets in which each letter also represents a word. Today they can be drawn on many other materials like clay or paper. Each letter is traditionally carved into a stone or piece of wood, which is why the oldest runes have no curved lines. Like cards or coins or bones, runes are thrown all at once or pulled one at a time to answer a question, but the theme is randomness. That’s quite a bit older than tarot, but today we use them in a similar fashion. The set of 24 runes that I use is called the Elder Futhark and dates to about 2000 years ago. Throughout Northern Europe there have been several evolutions of Futharks. ![]() Runes are essentially an alphabet, except that we call them a Futhark for the sounds made by the first six letters.
